When you consider the number of children who are sexually abused, the young people who grow up in violent homes, the adults who experience sexual assault, and the many people who live with relationship abuse, it becomes clear that every workplace in the country employs a substantial cohort of people with lived experience of these issues. This group would dwarf, and also overlap with, many of the other minority or special interest groups you might currently be aware of in your organisation. Depending on the gender mix in your workplace, and using national averages, a conservative estimate would put this figure at around 25% of your people.
Using the calculator below you can get an idea of how many people in your organisation may have these kinds of lived experiences. Use this data with caution. The data-sets are robust for understanding national averages, but what the data can't tell you is how well it maps onto your workforce - your numbers could be lower, or higher. Whilst the national average statistics may well reflect the experiences of your workforce don't add up the numbers to get a 'grand total', unfortunately many of these experiences overlap each other and any grand total number may be very misleading.
The Sleeping Giant
Everyday throughout the UK literally millions of these people get up and go to work.
They walk past your values written on the wall. They’re invited to ‘bring their whole selves’ into the workplace. But they are never invited to bring this - the fact that they have lived experience of sexual harm.
Have you ever looked at the statistics for sexual harm in the UK? They are heart breaking.
